Quansight Futures & Quansight Capital
Our first vehicles emerge from Quansight, the company Travis Oliphant founded to sustain and commercialize the open-source scientific computing stack. Early investing is an extension of ecosystem building rather than a separate activity.

The first dedicated fund formalizes the approach: back technical founders working on open source, data infrastructure and developer tooling at the moment a project starts becoming a product.

Fund II scales the strategy while the Open Technology Incubator (OTI) is established to steward open-source projects and help maintainer-led teams form real companies. Investing and company-building become two halves of one system.

The Open Technology Incubator (OTI) is the company-building side of the same ecosystem. OTI stewards and supports open-source projects, from NumPy, SciPy and Numba to Dask, Conda, Bokeh, Jupyter and dozens of others, and helps maintainer-led teams turn that work into companies.
Open Technology Ventures is the capital side. The two are separate entities with a shared network and a shared belief about how foundational technology becomes commercial.
- OTI gives us visibility into projects years before a conventional investor would see a pitch.
- Founders coming out of the incubator arrive with governance, licensing and packaging decisions already thought through.
- Portfolio companies outside the incubator still draw on the same maintainer, foundation and enterprise relationships.
- And the ecosystem itself gets reinvestment, which keeps the underlying technology healthy.
Practically, that means a founder working with us is not just receiving a check. They are joining a network that has already done the hard parts of commercializing open technology.

We invest at pre-seed through Series A, lead or co-lead, and stay concentrated enough to be genuinely useful to every company we back.
Source from ecosystems, not decks
Most of what we see comes from maintainers, contributors, research groups and enterprise operators we already work with. We are usually tracking a project long before there is a company or a round.
Diligence the technology first
We evaluate the code, the community, the adoption curve and the dependency graph, then ask what commercial shape the technology can support. Technical credibility is assessed by people who have shipped the same class of software.
Lead or co-lead early
We invest at pre-seed, seed and Series A, and we are comfortable being the first institutional money in a project that has users but not yet a category. The OTV Opportunity Fund lets us keep concentrating into winners later.
Build the company alongside the founders
Through OTI and the wider Open Technology network, portfolio teams get hands-on help with licensing and business-model design, packaging, enterprise pricing, first go-to-market hires and foundation or governance strategy.
Open enterprise doors
The ecosystem reaches maintainers, foundations, national research institutions and enterprise buyers already standardized on the underlying open technology. That is often the fastest path to a portfolio company's first serious contracts.

A perspective shaped by building open technology.
Open Technology Ventures co-founder Travis Oliphant has spent much of his career helping build the scientific and open-source computing ecosystem.
He created NumPy and contributed to the creation of SciPy, technologies that became foundational components of scientific computing, data science and modern artificial intelligence.
He later co-founded Anaconda, helping turn the Python data-science ecosystem into commercially supported infrastructure used across enterprises, universities and research organizations.
